Mari Labs started as a web3 game studio in 2021 with their popular game Pegasi, but has evolved into a broader tech studio identifying issues in web3 and building products to address them. They recently migrated Pegasi operations to an Avalanche subnet called Mirai Chain to capture more value, citing the responsive Avalanche team and infrastructure as reasons for the move.
Their new game Petopia incorporates a guild-like structure called Guild Tech aimed to create a self-sustaining economy around teams competing for a share of overall game revenue. This brings an esports dynamic and allows outside speculators to support teams. Petopia also incorporates traditional mobile game monetization as a backup if the web3 elements don't gain traction. Early results have been promising.
They plan to enable Pegasi players to bring assets to Pegasi V2 and allow staking events and NFT sales to give exclusive access. PGX governance tokens will still represent Pegasi and be used for some functions. Mirai tokens are also planned to serve an ecosystem-level purpose. Interoperability is still challenging between games, so they are focused on branding partnerships similar to their anime art style.
They launched a dedicated Mirai companion app to enable web3 features like in-app crypto purchases across games after an arduous 6-month app store approval process. They don't plan for now to pursue AR/VR given their focus on accessible casual/mid-core mobile games. Overall they aim to blend web3 and web2 strategies to build out a gaming ecosystem.
